Innovative Wheelchair Prototype by Batangas High Schoolers Wins Silver at Global Robotics Competition

Two Grade 12 students from Paharang Integrated School in Batangas City, Philippines, Aron Moises Ronquillo and Jhomil Claveria, achieved remarkable success at the 2023 World Robot Games in Taipei, Taiwan. Their innovative creation, a prototype wheelchair, earned them a silver medal in the Innovative Robot category. This achievement reflects not just their technical skills, but also their humanitarian spirit, as they were motivated by the desire to assist a disabled classmate. Their creation is more than just a mobility aid; it's a multifunctional device designed to enhance the quality of life for the elderly and children with special needs.

The wheelchair is equipped with a remote control for easy navigation and includes several advanced features. Among these is a convertible bed, catering to the needs of users who may require rest at various times. Moreover, it integrates a medical care hub, complete with a pulse rate sensor, adding a layer of health monitoring for the user. An alert system is also in place, ensuring that family members can be notified in case of emergencies. This combination of features signifies a leap in wheelchair design, moving beyond basic mobility to a more holistic approach to user care and comfort.

The mentor of the team, Rosalie Borbon, expressed the team's aspirations to compete on an international level and emphasized the compassionate drive behind their innovation. This project is a testament to their dedication and the impact that young minds can have when technology is merged with empathy.
