The International League of Peoples' Struggle Commission 10 strongly condemns the heinous and barbaric war crime carried out by the Tatmadaw military dictatorship against the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Kachin State in Myanmar.
Various reports have unanimously pointed to the Tatmadaw-led military government for bombing Mung Lai Hkyet, a camp that was home to around 850 people. The horrifying attack that occurred on October 10, killed at least 29 people, including young children under the age of 16, while at least 56 others were injured.
Though estimates of the death toll differ, the ongoing recovery of bodies buried beneath the explosion's wreckage may lead to a potential increase in the count. A Kachin activist based in Laizaeven attested to witnessing a three-month-old infant among the victims.
This bombing is a fascist brutality violating principles of democracy and peace and represents another crime against humanity spearheaded by the Myanmar military. This is not the first time the authoritarian junta regime has committed such atrocity.
Following its hostile takeover in February 2021, the military has ramped up its airstrikes against civilian sites—whether it be homes, hospitals, schools, or places of worship. Just last year, the military killed 80 people at a concert to celebrate the founding of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO).
The KIO is one of Myanmar's prominent ethnic rebel groups struggling for independence since 1960. In response to the violent aftermath of the 2021 coup d'etat, the armed wing of the KIO – the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) – extended refuge to those fleeing military atrocities.
The recent October 2023 bombing occurred just a few kilometers from a KIA-operated base, which also sits on the border of Chinese territory. This highlights the military's increasing desperation to silence the relentless opposition, as it risks angering the imperialist nation that supplies its weapons.
The deliberate targeting of a camp sheltering vulnerable civilians, who have already endured immense hardship and suffering, is an undeniably inhumane act that demands our collective outrage.
Let us stand in solidarity with the people of Kachin who have been living under the oppressive rule of the junta for far too long.
The ongoing persecution and massacre in the country should not be tolerated. It is incumbent upon us all to apply political pressure to end all forms of violence throughout the country and free the people from the fascism of the State military dictatorship.
We loudly call upon the international community to join us in condemning the Tatmadaw government for this massacre and blatant disregard of international humanitarian laws. We urge all advocates of humanity to denounce the imperialist countries that enable and profit from war arms.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of this ruthless attack, and we express our unwavering support for the people of Kachin, for the peoples of Myanmar, as they continue their rightful struggle for genuine democracy and peace-based justice.
The Commission 10 stands united with all the Indigenous Peoples and ethnic nationalities to defeat the military junta. We stand united in our struggle against this act of brutality and towards genuine peace anchored in justice and right to self-determination!
Stop the attacks against the ethnic nationalities and people in Myanmar!
Justice for Kachin people!
Justice for all the victims of Myanmar military dictatorship!
Down with the Tatmadaw military dictatorship!
Fight for self-determination and freedom with undiminished international solidarity!
