The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) has issued an advisory encouraging the public to continue wearing masks, particularly seniors and those in vulnerable sectors, in response to a surge in 'walking pneumonia' cases. This respiratory illness, caused by the pathogen mycoplasma pneumoniae, is characterized by chest X-ray findings consistent with pneumonia, yet patients often remain ambulatory and asymptomatic. The concern arises from recent reports of increased cases among children in China.
Health Undersecretary Eric Tayag emphasized the importance of early detection and testing for mycoplasma pneumoniae, although only a few centers in the Philippines, including the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), can confirm the illness. The DOH is alerting the public to the possibility of prolonged coughing, which could indicate 'walking pneumonia,' and is distinct from other respiratory illnesses like tuberculosis.
In light of these developments, the DOH is reinforcing public health and hospital preparedness measures and continues to monitor the situation closely. The advisory serves as a preventive measure to manage and control the spread of the illness amidst the ongoing global health challenges.
