The tragic stabbing incident near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which resulted in the death of a 23-year-old German-Filipino tourist and injured two others, including a British and a French national, has led to a significant investigation. The French anti-terrorism prosecutor's office has opened a probe into this fatal attack, with suspect Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab potentially facing preliminary charges of murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. Rajabpour-Miyandoab, a French national born in 1997, had previously been under surveillance for suspected Islamic radicalization and was known for mental health issues.
Prior to the attack, Rajabpour-Miyandoab recorded a video pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group and expressing support for Islamic extremists in various regions, including Africa, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. He converted to Islam at 18 and quickly adopted extremist ideologies. In 2016, Rajabpour-Miyandoab was convicted and imprisoned for four years on charges of planning violence and had intended to join the Islamic State group in Syria. Despite being under psychiatric treatment and surveillance, he managed to carry out this recent attack.
French authorities, including President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, have expressed their condolences to the victim's family and reaffirmed their stance against terrorism. The incident, occurring close to the iconic Eiffel Tower, has raised concerns about security, especially in the lead-up to the Olympic Games in Paris.
