San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has announced a festive gesture for the holiday season by waiving toll fees on its operated expressways during select hours. The toll fee waiver will be in effect from 10 p.m. on December 24 to 6 a.m. on December 25, and similarly from 10 p.m. on December 31 to 6 a.m. on January 1, 2024. This initiative covers major expressways including the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR), the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), the Skyway System, the NAIA Expressway, and the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union (TPLEX) Expressway.
SMC described this annual tradition as a demonstration of the Christmas spirit, aiming to assist those who need to travel during these hours to be with their loved ones. It is also seen as a gesture to spread goodwill and well wishes at the start of the new year. However, the corporation also advised motorists to plan for extra travel time due to the anticipated heavy traffic around Metro Manila, especially when heading to transport hubs.
This toll fee waiver aligns with SMC's ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow and efficiency on their expressways. Earlier in the year, the company expressed its support for the Toll Regulatory Board's move to shift to cashless collection on major tollways in the country, highlighting its potential to reduce traffic congestion.
The waiver of toll fees by San Miguel Corporation during these holiday times is a reflection of the company's commitment to serving the community and contributing to the festive spirit, while also acknowledging the practical challenges of holiday travel.
