In a recent update from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the importance of a more robust information campaign to enhance public preparedness against strong earthquakes.
The call comes as the nation experiences increased seismic activity, with a magnitude 7.4 earthquake shaking Surigao del Sur and parts of Mindanao on December 2.

During a Palace briefing, Secretary Solidum acknowledged that the country is more prepared than a decade ago, but stressed the need for continuous efforts in educating the public. "We have more youth now than before that they also need to know," he stated.
The earthquake on December 2, with its epicenter traced 29 km northeast of Hinatuan, resulted in 4,879 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 6.6. While 54 of these aftershocks were felt, 1,202 were plotted or located, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Solidum, formerly with Phivolcs, explained that major earthquakes typically trigger numerous aftershocks. He highlighted the positive aspect that, historically, earthquakes in Mindanao have not caused significant casualties. However, he emphasized the need for public awareness regarding active faults and trenches, with three to four trenches in Mindanao alone.
The Philippine Trench, located between Samar Island and Surigao provinces, has not moved significantly for a long time, creating gaps where earthquakes can occur. Solidum also pointed out the activity in the Cotabato Trench, which generated the magnitude 6.8 offshore Davao Occidental earthquake on November 17.
In addition to the information campaign, Solidum urged the public to reinforce older buildings. "We need to strengthen building preparedness, and that is where the solution would lie in the potential number of casualties," he stressed.
As the nation grapples with increased seismic activity, the DOST's call for a more robust information campaign underscores the importance of public awareness and preparedness in mitigating the impact of earthquakes. Stay informed, stay safe.
