Senator Imee Marcos has urged for a halt on both traditional and online lotto games organized by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), citing concerns over what she deems "mathematically improbable" results. In a passionate plea, Marcos expressed her dismay and suspicion over the recent patterns of lotto outcomes, especially the frequent wins and peculiar number sequences, emphasizing that such occurrences defy logical mathematical probability.
During a virtual interaction with Senate reporters, Marcos voiced her frustration and empathy for the poor bettors, feeling that their hopes and stakes are being toyed with. "Until these events are satisfactorily explained, the lotto and e-lotto games should be put on pause. No one believes them anymore, and I feel sorry for the poor bettors," she stated.
This call to action from Marcos comes in the wake of a Senate games and amusement committee investigation, which revealed that jackpot prizes exceeding P2.4 billion were won in 11 lotto games since December 2023. Such an unprecedented streak of winnings has raised eyebrows and fueled skepticism about the integrity of the lotto system.
In response to doubts about the possibility of manipulating the game outcomes, PCSO General Manager Mel Robles insisted on the system's integrity, asserting that the results are beyond manipulation. "I would like to assure you that you can never, never manipulate it. That's why we are allowed to bet," Robles explained, emphasizing the objective of attracting bettors, especially when the jackpot is substantial.
However, Marcos remained unconvinced by PCSO's justifications, questioning the credibility of their explanations and the apparent anomalies in the number sequences and identities of the winners. "Do you really believe that? What they are saying is unbelievable. They are making non-technical matters technical. You can see it in the numbers, you can see it in the names. We are not stupid here. We know it, so they should stop it," Marcos argued.
The PCSO has yet to respond to Marcos' statement as of the time of reporting. Amidst this controversy, Marcos previously pointed out the unusually high number of lotto winners, humorously suggesting that it could be a record-setting phenomenon worthy of Guinness recognition.
As the debate unfolds, the legitimacy and fairness of the lotto games remain under intense scrutiny, with the public and officials alike calling for transparency and reassurance in the gaming system that affects the lives and hopes of countless individuals.
