Capiz Beach Shines with Natural Glow from Bioluminescent Organisms

A captivating natural phenomenon was recently observed along the shores of a beach in Roxas City, Capiz, where the waters sparkled with a mysterious yet mesmerizing blue glow. The enchanting light show caught the attention of Shayne Lee, a passerby who was amazed by the glimmering waters.

This fascinating display, as explained in a report by Kuya Kim on "24 Oras," is attributed to bioluminescent organisms that inhabit the water. Bioluminescence is a form of chemiluminescence where light is produced through a chemical reaction within these living organisms. Remarkably, this light is a cold light, with less than 20% of it generating thermal energy or heat, making it an efficient form of natural illumination.

The process involves two key chemicals, luciferin and luciferase. Luciferin is the substance that produces light when oxidized, and luciferase is the enzyme that catalyzes this reaction. Bioluminescence serves various purposes among marine life, including defense mechanisms, attracting mates, luring prey, and communication with other organisms.

Marine biologist Mylene Sadagnot clarified that bioluminescence can be produced by a variety of organisms, not just algae. In the case of the Roxas City beach, the specific organisms responsible for the glow were not identified without analyzing water samples. However, planktonic dinoflagellates, single-celled organisms known as protists, are commonly known to produce bioluminescent light.

This ethereal phenomenon highlights the beauty and complexity of marine ecosystems, showcasing a variety of organisms that contribute to the bioluminescence observed in our oceans, including fish, bacteria, and jellies. The shores of Capiz have provided a rare glimpse into this intriguing natural wonder, illuminating the night with nature's own light show.
