A heartrending incident on Maharlika Highway in Barangay San Miguel, Sto. Tomas City, Batangas, claimed the life of a 39-year-old motorcycle rider after his vehicle skidded and was subsequently run over by a following bus.
GMA Regional TV Balitang Southern Tagalog's report on Wednesday highlighted the unfortunate event, revealing that the accident occurred under slippery road conditions. The victim, hailing from Alaminos, Laguna, was navigating the highway when he tragically lost control of his motorcycle.
"The road was slippery while the two vehicles [the motorcycle and the bus] were traveling," stated Police Major Emil Mendoza, Deputy Chief of Sto Tomas City Police.
The force of the crash caused the rider to be ejected onto the center of the road, where the oncoming tourist bus was unable to stop in time, leading to the fatal collision. "The motorcycle driver was thrown into the middle of the road, and the tourist bus, unable to brake, hit the motorcycle driver," Mendoza continued.
The remains of the victim have been returned to Laguna, and the bus driver was initially released after reaching an agreement with the rider's family. However, Mendoza noted that the family is considering pressing charges against the bus driver, alleging non-compliance with the agreed terms.
Efforts to obtain comments from the bus driver and the victim's family are ongoing, as the community mourns the loss of a life in this tragic accident.
