China has emphatically stated that the United States holds no authority to intervene in South China Sea matters, following comments by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken affirming Washington's commitment to defend the Philippines in the region. During a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian asserted that the U.S. should not meddle in issues pertaining to the South China Sea, which involve China and the Philippines directly.
Blinken's remarks came during his visit to Manila, aiming to bolster American support for regional allies amidst growing tensions with China. Lin Jian criticized the military cooperation between the U.S. and the Philippines, warning against any actions that could infringe upon China's sovereignty and maritime claims in the South China Sea or support what he termed the Philippines' illegitimate territorial assertions.
China's stance remains firm, with commitments to vigorously defend its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, and to promote peace and stability in the South China Sea. This region, through which a significant portion of global trade passes, has been a hotbed of territorial disputes, with China's expansive claims clashing with those of several Southeast Asian countries, despite international legal judgments challenging the validity of China's territorial assertions.
