The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has raised an alert for a "danger" level heat index in four locales on Monday. The areas identified include Aparri, Cagayan, and Catarman, Northern Samar, both projected to reach 43 degrees Celsius, while CBSUA in Pili, Camarines Sur, and Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur, are expected to experience temperatures around 42°C.
PAGASA explained that such high heat index values, ranging from 42 to 51°C, could lead to serious health risks like heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke if exposure continues. The heat index represents the perceived temperature, factoring in both humidity and air temperature, thereby indicating the level of heat stress on the human body.
Residents in these areas are advised to be vigilant for signs of heat-related illnesses, including excessive sweating, fatigue, dizziness, rapid pulse, nausea, and vomiting. As the heat is anticipated to intensify, particularly during April, PAGASA recommends minimizing outdoor activities, staying hydrated while avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and wearing protective clothing like hats and long sleeves.
In response to the extreme heat, educational authorities have suspended face-to-face classes in several cities and towns to protect students from the harsh conditions. PAGASA also linked the current heat surge to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, which has been affecting the country since July of the previous year, leading to decreased rainfall and elevated temperatures.
