The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is gearing up for an expected surge of over one million passengers at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) during Holy Week, from March 24 to March 31. This forecast marks a 15% increase from last year's figures during the same period, demonstrating a significant rebound in travel activity.
MIAA's "OPLAN Biyaheng Ayos: Semana Santa 2024" is in full swing to manage the anticipated influx, reflecting a strong recovery in travel demand. Early March statistics showed daily passenger numbers reaching between 128,000 and 138,000, with the Holy Week traffic potentially peaking at 140,000 passengers per day.
Eric Ines, MIAA General Manager, highlighted the robust growth in domestic travel, which has consistently exceeded pre-pandemic levels. The authority is set to accommodate the seasonal rush, coinciding with the summer peak travel period, ensuring smooth operations across NAIA's terminals.
To facilitate the increased traffic, the MIAA has optimized airport facilities, including ensuring the readiness of backup power systems and maintaining critical infrastructure. Scheduled maintenance and operational tests of emergency power systems have been conducted to guarantee uninterrupted services.
Additionally, the MIAA is implementing adjustments to minimize disruptions, such as modifying the runway closure schedule to accommodate the higher number of flights expected during the Lenten season. Collaboration with various government and transportation agencies is underway to streamline processes and enhance passenger experiences, particularly in managing queues and ensuring efficient staffing at immigration and security checkpoints.
Airlines are urged to prepare for the uptick in travel demand, including having contingency plans and adequate staffing to handle the increased passenger volume. The MIAA also advises passengers to arrive early for their flights and utilize online check-in or kiosks to expedite their airport journey.
With comprehensive preparations in place, NAIA is set to manage the Holy Week travel surge effectively, demonstrating the airport's readiness to handle the seasonal demand and contribute to a smoother travel experience for both domestic and international passengers.
