San Miguel Corporation (SMC), led by President and CEO Ramon Ang, has decided to abandon the P95-billion Pasig River Expressway (PAREX) project, respecting public feedback and environmental concerns. Ang emphasized the company's responsiveness to public sentiment, stating that the project will not proceed due to the negative reception from various sectors of society.
The PAREX initiative, initially proposed to ease traffic congestion and provide a new transportation route in Metro Manila, faced significant opposition. Critics argued that the six-lane elevated expressway, planned to stretch from Manila to Taguig City along the Pasig River, would mar the river's aesthetics and disrupt the historical and environmental landscape.
Despite SMC's assurance that the expressway would be constructed along the river's easement, not covering the waterway itself, the project met with disapproval for its potential environmental impact and threat to heritage sites along the Pasig River.
Acknowledging these concerns, Ang reiterated the conglomerate's commitment to public welfare, indicating that SMC would not pursue projects detrimental to communal interests. This decision marks a significant shift in SMC's infrastructure strategy, prioritizing environmental considerations and community feedback in its future endeavors.
