The Philippines, United States, and France have commenced a multilateral maritime exercise in the West Philippine Sea, as part of the annual Balikatan Exercise for 2024. This strategic military collaboration aims to strengthen interoperability among the participating forces.
The exercise, announced by Captain Ariel Coloma of the Armed Forces of the Philippines' Western Command, involves significant naval assets. These include the Philippine Navy's BRP Ramon Alcaraz and BRP Davao del Sur, the French Navy's FS Vendémiaire, and the USS Harpers Ferry from the US Navy, all setting sail from Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
Training activities for this exercise are robust, beginning on the eastern coast of Palawan with division tactics and officer of watch maneuvers. The journey will continue northward to the Mindoro Strait before entering the West Philippine Sea. Scheduled activities include photo exercises and gunnery practices, set to run through April 29.
This year's Balikatan, the 39th iteration, is the largest to date, involving approximately 16,700 troops from the Philippines and the US. It started on April 22 and will conclude on May 10. The exercise is designed not only to enhance cooperative defense capabilities but also to test new defense equipment, techniques, tactics, and procedures.
Simultaneously, the presence of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea has noticeably increased, as reported by Commodore Roy Vincent Trinidad, the Philippine Navy spokesperson for the region. Monitoring over the past two months has shown a fluctuation in numbers, peaking this week at 124 vessels, including ships from the People's Liberation Army Navy and the China Coast Guard, coinciding with the Balikatan exercises.
The increased Chinese naval activity in the region underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the critical importance of these joint exercises in asserting navigational rights and enhancing regional security.
