Bretman Rock, the charismatic social media personality known for his fitness and lifestyle content, recently clapped back at a Filipino gym coach, Edison Vargas, who implied on TikTok that being gay equates to a lack of strength in the gym. In a video, Vargas attempted to lift weights and controversially captioned it, "Bakla ako 'pag hindi ko nabuhat 'to" (I'm gay if I can't lift this).
Responding in the comments section with his signature wit, Bretman mocked the light weight being lifted and the technique used, saying, "Lmfao, girl, at least put your elbows closer together" and "All that for such a lightweight sis." Following the backlash, Vargas turned off the comments on his viral video.
Vargas later issued a statement claiming he did not intend to offend anyone and had merely copied the caption from other creators, stating, "Ilan lang ang original content ko kaya may pinag gayahan lang ako dito" (Most of my content isn't original, so I just copied this from others). He also noted that he saw no reason not to post it as he had not observed any negative comments on similar posts.
Bretman, who has been openly sharing his fitness journey, showcasing his strength and flexibility, often challenges stereotypes about gender and physical capability. In 2022, he even shared a video of himself completing deadlift reps while wearing a skirt, further proving his commitment to breaking down barriers and flaunting his physical prowess.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in sports and fitness, reminding us of the importance of inclusive and respectful communication in all spaces.
