When the COP28 climate summit was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates last year, the summit president was Sultan al-Jaber, the chairperson of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc). He made headlines for being skeptical of the mitigating effect of fossil fuel phaseout to the climate crisis despite leading the event, something his critics feared before it was held. Last week, the heaviest rain in the country poured over the Persian Gulf region, flooding all seven emirates and neighbours. Climate change is to blame.
Despite all of the events and the record-breaking average temperatures that run consecutively, you still doubt about humankind's accountability and blame for the climate crisis. "Natural", or "left-wing propaganda", to "make us pay more carbon taxes". The denial comes from conservative circles that also reject liberalism, science and vaccines. I will write about that in the coming months, my focus is on the climate crisis denial for this piece.
I don't know what to write to you, because if I want to talk with you to understand your concerns, I better have a conversation with you rather than making another piece which you would not read. I don't think I have to write again to my fellow, since I don't know what new strategy I can propose to them. Maybe I'll just ask you about your sentiments with Big companies.
We'd agree with Big Pesticide; who wants to be poisoned? But with Big Pharma, you also say they poison you, although we can agree they charge us much. With Big Tech, your complaint is they censor (I agree in certain issues only like Syria) and allegedly spy on you. How about Big Oil? You say "more carbon tax", or "EVs are not climate-friendly either", or you put quotation marks beside the word green, showing your skepticism to green energy, so it means you support Big Oil?
Why? Do they provide more jobs? Will our economies fall if we abandon fossil fuels? Or is it the Left that attacks oil companies? Big Oil has involvement in climate disinformation (read here, here, here, here and here), but knowing you, you must have been told to reject information literacy. I'm not happy with it and will never laugh at you for it, though.
The reason I made mention of the Big companies is your perception that they destroy your life, our lives. I agree that giants are exploiting us the masses, and it sucks; I'll also write on that. But your criticism goes beyond: Big Tech, Big Pharma, even to the FBI, CIA, the Pentagon, MI5, MI6, plus the EU, UN, WEF (among these, I dislike the WEF). The Deep State behind, the New World Order. I rather believe those rallying behind Trump, Putin and Xi are pushing for that NWO. But making an exclusion for the Big Oil? Isn't that inconsistent? Killing us by heating the planet and accelerating formation of natural disasters?
But the demagogue influencers whom you follow tell you to continue doubting, in line with the criticism against liberalism, science and vaccines. I wouldn't be surprised if they are on the Big Oil's payroll; these giant companies need to save their own faces. Maybe al-Jaber will still insist on keeping fossil fuel use. I have to tell you they made you like frogs in boiling water, or like the dog Question Hound in the most famous strip of the webcomic Gunshow ("On Fire"):
"This is fine."
"I am okay with the events that are unfolding currently."
"That's okay, things are going to be okay."
And Question Hound melted in flames.
