Authorities in Baguio City have seized 97.13 kilos of spoiled meat and fish products from satellite markets, also known as "talipapa," across the city. The confiscated items were deemed unfit for human consumption due to improper handling, as detailed in a Facebook post by the Baguio City Public Information Office on Sunday.
Spot inspections were conducted in barangays San Vicente, Kias, Loakan, and Camp 7, revealing significant food safety violations. The spoiled goods were subsequently disposed of by the Baguio City Veterinary and Agriculture Office.
During these inspections, authorities also confiscated two defective weighing scales out of the 46 that were inspected.
Violations of Republic Act 9296, known as the Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines, can result in fines ranging from P100,000 to P1 million. Additionally, those found in breach of zoning requirements, shop planning and design, electrical and lighting standards, sanitation requirements, and solid waste management regulations face fines of P1,000 to P5,000, and potential business closure.
This operation underscores the city's commitment to ensuring food safety and maintaining public health standards.
