Google's AI search feature, designed to digest web content and present it in a concise, confident manner, is generating a troubling amount of incorrect information. Over the past week, social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has been inundated with screenshots showcasing the AI's errors, which range from laughable to dangerous. These include historical inaccuracies and bizarre health advice, leading many to question the effectiveness of Google's substantial investment in AI technology.
One glaring example involves a dubious health tip suggesting that "eating ass can boost your immune system," allegedly backed by a 2018 study from the University of California, Santa Barbara. This claim, however, stems from a satirical article in the university's student paper, The Daily Nexus. The AI further falsely stated that people who eat ass are "33 percent less likely to catch airborne illnesses" and that higher levels of "truffle butter" in saliva improve immunity—both statements lacking any scientific basis.
Other bizarre suggestions include using gasoline to make "spicy spaghetti" and adding glue to pizza sauce to prevent cheese slippage. The latter advice was traced back to a humorous, decade-old Reddit comment. Additionally, the AI has made numerous other errors, such as nonsensical math equations and incorrect claims about the number of Muslim U.S. presidents, echoing conspiracy theories.
Google's spokesperson told The Verge that these errors are from "generally very uncommon queries" and are not representative of typical user experiences. However, critics argue that even uncommon searches deserve accurate responses, especially when misinformation can cause harm.
As Google's AI tool transitions from merely aggregating content to creating it, the stakes for accuracy and reliability have never been higher. The company's dominant position in the search market, controlling over 80% of it, means that the widespread dissemination of misinformation could have significant consequences.
With billions invested in its AI projects, Google now faces the challenge of rectifying these issues without abandoning its ambitious AI initiatives. The outcome remains uncertain, but the current state of Google's AI search is causing considerable concern among users and experts alike.
