The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has reached a significant milestone in its operational capabilities through the recent successful completion of Balikatan 2024, a joint military exercise with the United States. Held from April 22 to May 10, this exercise has crucially prepared the PAF for its inaugural deployment of aircraft and personnel to an international military drill, marking a new chapter in the country's defense narrative.
Colonel Maria Consuelo Castillo, a spokesperson for the PAF, highlighted the importance of the Balikatan exercises in preparing for upcoming international commitments. "These large force deployment exercises have been crucial in preparing for our first participation in the Pitch Black exercises, where we will deploy our FA-50 aircraft internationally for the first time," she explained during an interview on Super Radyo dzBB.
The FA-50PH Golden Eagle, a jet manufactured by South Korea's Korea Aerospace Industries, serves as the backbone of the PAF's air combat capabilities. Delivered between 2015 and 2017, these jets perform dual roles as lead-in fighter trainers and light combat aircraft. With a fleet of 12 jets, the PAF is well-equipped to engage in both training and combat scenarios, underscoring its growing aerial prowess.
The upcoming Exercise Pitch Black, scheduled to take place in Australia between July and August this year, represents a significant step forward for the Philippine military. Traditionally, PAF personnel have attended such international drills as observers. However, for the first time, the PAF plans to send four to six of its FA-50 aircraft and approximately 150 personnel, actively participating in what is described as a "multinational large force employment exercise" over three weeks.
Castillo emphasized the readiness of the PAF to engage in international military exercises, indicating a significant boost in confidence and capability following the insights and experience gained from Balikatan 2024. The exercise not only focused on air asset deployment but also encompassed extensive ground operations, providing a comprehensive training platform for the PAF personnel involved.
"This is a significant development in our capability to participate in such large-scale exercises outside the country," Castillo remarked. She underscored the value of these experiences in enhancing operational readiness and strategic planning, vital for the PAF's ongoing modernization and capability enhancement initiatives.
