Arnold Clavio, the well-known GMA Network broadcast journalist, is currently on the mend after experiencing a hemorrhagic stroke earlier this month.
Health Update and Rehabilitation
In a recent online interview with his co-hosts on "Unang Hirit," Clavio provided an update on his condition. "Mali yata 'yung 'road to recovery' kasi marami pang humps," Clavio said. He explained that while he is recovering, he still requires significant rehabilitation and therapy. "OK ako, pero kailangan pa ng rehabilitation, therapy, kasi 'yung right side ng body ko nawalan 'yung connection sa pumutok na part ng brain ko eh," he added, describing ongoing numbness and weakness, which affects his balance, making him feel like "a baby learning to walk."
The Stroke Incident
Clavio recounted the frightening moment the stroke occurred. It began while he was driving home after a golf session. "Kinatakot ko kasi, nakita ko sa speedometer ng sasakayan, matulin na pala ako, tapos hinahanap ko 'yung brakes, hindi ko matapakan," he recalled. Realizing he was in a busy area and fearing an accident, he managed to stop at a gasoline station to assess his condition. He then drove himself to the nearest hospital, where he received prompt medical attention.
Diagnosis and Immediate Actions
Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors found Clavio's blood pressure and blood sugar levels were abnormally high. A CT scan confirmed he had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. "GInawa ko, nag-Google ako, which is mali," he said, joking with his co-hosts. He mistakenly believed he had only two days to live based on his online search results, which led to a dramatic phone call with his wife, Ina.
Reflection and Gratitude
Despite the initial scare, Clavio expressed a sense of peace and readiness. "I'm ready, talagang at peace ako," he said. He felt a profound moment of reflection, believing he had accomplished everything he wanted in life. "During that time naman, naramdaman ko 'yung pagmamahal ni Lord," he added, feeling fortunate that the stroke wasn't more severe. "Hindi na-deform ang mukha ko, hindi nabulol o nawala ang boses ko," he said, acknowledging the common immediate effects of strokes on patients.
Ongoing Recovery and Message to Others
Clavio now regularly monitors his blood pressure and blood sugar as part of his daily routine. He remains committed to physical therapy and rehabilitation, maintaining a positive outlook. "Ayokong idamay kayo," he said, emphasizing his desire to remain cheerful for his audience. "Gusto kong makita niyong masaya ako. Masaya kayo, masaya na rin ako. Ingat po tayo. Listen to your body."
Clavio first revealed his stroke in mid-June and has since updated the public that he is out of danger, with the worst behind him. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or leaks, leading to brain bleeding, which can result from a head injury or a weakened artery wall.
