Former president Rodrigo Duterte emphasized the importance of respecting the court's decision to acquit former senator Leila de Lima of her third and final drug-related case after seven years. This follows her previous acquittal in two other cases.
During a visit to Tacloban City, Duterte stated that De Lima's acquittal should be welcomed as a sign of a functioning democracy, according to a report on GMA's "24 Oras Weekend" on Sunday. The Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court Branch 206 granted De Lima's demurrer, citing the prosecution's failure to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
De Lima, who filed her demurrer in March, is now considering legal action against Duterte and others she believes were responsible for her prolonged detention on drug-related charges.
Duterte's Comments on Other Matters
In the same report, Duterte advised not to overinterpret remarks made by his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, who mentioned that there will be three Dutertes running for senatorial seats in 2025: the former President himself, Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte, and Davao City First District Representative Paolo Duterte.
Duterte also noted that he was not consulted by his daughter regarding her resignation from Marcos' Cabinet, and he expressed that he will leave decisions about the 2028 elections up to divine will.
