On the third anniversary of former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III's passing, his family commemorated his courageous defense of the Philippines' sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea.
In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Noynoy's younger sister, Kris Aquino, shared a video highlighting the events surrounding the West Philippine Sea (WPS) dispute. "We must protect what rightfully belongs to the Philippines, especially in the West Philippine Sea!" she wrote.
Former Senator Bam Aquino, Noynoy's cousin, paid tribute by sharing a video of the late president's speech on Facebook. "We remember your bravery, honesty, and excellence, PNoy. Thank you so much for defending the nation against abusers before, and for your deep love for our beloved Philippines," he expressed.
Aquino's legacy includes the landmark 501-page ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, Netherlands, which invalidated China's nine-dash line claim over the South China Sea in 2016. The arbitration case, initiated by Aquino's administration in January 2013, marked a significant victory for the Philippines in asserting its maritime rights.
Noynoy Aquino passed away in 2021 due to renal disease secondary to diabetes. To honor his memory, family, friends, and supporters gathered for a Mass at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City.
