The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is set to host an exposition titled "Handa Pilipinas" in Laoag City from July 3-5. This event aims to highlight locally-developed technologies designed to enhance disaster preparedness, particularly in the Ilocos Region.
Dr. Teresita A. Tabaoag, DOST 1 Regional Director, emphasized the urgency of this initiative. "The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries to natural disasters, as highlighted by the World Risk Index. Our goal is to promote disaster preparedness through innovative technologies," she stated.

Over the past four decades, the Philippines has faced numerous natural hazards, with storms and typhoons accounting for 55% of these events. Floods contribute 25%, while earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, droughts, wildfires, and epidemics make up the remaining percentages.
One of the key technologies to be showcased is GeoRiskPH. This platform facilitates the sharing of risk information, aiding local governments, communities, and national agencies in planning and preparing strategies to mitigate natural hazards.
Dr. Tabaoag noted, "We will be showcasing new technologies that support the DOST's four pillars and align with the 8-point Socio-Economic Agenda of the Marcos Administration."
The exposition aims not only to display these innovations but also to encourage local government units (LGUs) in Region 1 to adopt them. In support of this goal, the Regional Development Council (RDC) 1 has drafted Resolution No. 6, series of 2024, endorsing the adoption of suitable Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) technologies by local governments.
Additionally, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 1 has issued a memorandum encouraging local governments to participate in the exposition, reinforcing the collective effort to enhance disaster preparedness across the region.
Join "Handa Pilipinas" in Laoag City and witness firsthand the groundbreaking technologies poised to transform disaster management and resilience in the Philippines.
