Authorities apprehended a woman on Saturday suspected of defrauding three individuals with false employment offers. According to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the victims—Eugenio Carurucan Cruz, Ralph Alfred De Castro Vergarra, and Eugene John Cuz Dalit—were promised seasonal farm work in Jeju Island, South Korea, with a monthly salary of P80,000 by Nenita Yumol Sanguilas on February 20, 2024.
Details of the Scam
Sanguilas allegedly demanded a P150,000 processing fee to ensure their departure on February 29. The victims paid between P120,000 and P130,000, but were still unable to leave after several months, prompting them to file a complaint with the DMW.
Verification and Arrest
The DMW confirmed that Sanguilas was unlicensed to offer overseas jobs. She was caught accepting marked money from the victims during a joint entrapment operation by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Anti-Transnational Crime Unit (CIDG-ATCU) and the DMW-Migrant Workers Protection Bureau (DMW-MWPB) at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on Saturday morning.
Sanguilas is now detained at the CIDG Detention Facility at Camp Crame and faces charges of large-scale illegal recruitment and estafa.
Call to Action
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac urged other potential victims to come forward and file complaints.
