Gilas Pilipinas has commenced its training camp in Laguna without the presence of Scottie Thompson, as the team prepares for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Latvia.
The Inspire Sports Academy shared photos from the nationals' first day of training, highlighting the attendance of key players such as naturalized player Justin Brownlee, Kai Sotto, June Mar Fajardo, Chris Newsome, Dwight Ramos, CJ Perez, Carl Tamayo, Calvin Oftana, and Kevin Quiambao. Also present were former PBA import and newly appointed Far Eastern University head coach Sean Chambers, along with Barangay Ginebra players Ralph Cu and Donald Gumaru.
Japeth Aguilar and Mason Amos, who are stepping in for the injured AJ Edu and Jamie Malonzo, joined the camp as well.
Thompson will miss the qualifiers as he continues to recover from a bulging disc, according to the PBA website. Due to the event's proximity, a replacement for Thompson might not be feasible.
Before heading to the OQT, Gilas will play an exhibition match against the Taiwan Mustangs on Monday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig. The team will then face Latvia and Georgia in the OQT on July 3 and 4, respectively.
