Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during his meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. at MalacaƱang Palace on Monday, June 3, 2024, requested assistance from the Philippines in providing mental health workers to support Ukrainian soldiers.
Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for psychological and mental health support for soldiers affected by the ongoing conflict with Russia. "Many people need help when they come back; they can't lose in their families. It's difficult for them to study again," he explained.
In response, President Marcos assured Zelenskyy of the Philippines' readiness to help by sending Filipino mental health workers. Marcos highlighted the Philippines' renowned healthcare sector and expressed a commitment to aid civilians and innocents affected by the war. "This is something that comes naturally to the Philippines, so this will be something that we could pursue," Marcos stated.
The Philippines and Ukraine have maintained diplomatic relations for 32 years, with ties formally established on April 7, 1992. Zelenskyy, who arrived in the Philippines on Sunday night, expressed gratitude for the Philippines' support for Ukraine's peace efforts and sovereignty. The Philippines has consistently supported Ukraine's territorial integrity, voting at the UN General Assembly to condemn Russia's invasion.
