In a rare incident, the Gomez family in Paterson, New Jersey, experienced an unusual summer evening when a large chunk of ice smashed through their roof. The family, enjoying their yard, was startled by a massive crash.
"Out of nowhere you just hear a hollow sound coming down and honestly we didn't think anything of it and then you just hear a big DOOOOSH!" Sabrina Gomez recounted.
The "doosh" was the sound of a giant ice block crashing into their roof, narrowly missing the family by less than 12 feet. The impact left significant damage to the house but thankfully no one was injured.
Ice from the Sky
The Gomez family home lies under several flight paths from Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy, and LaGuardia airports. This phenomenon occurs when ice accumulates on airplane wings at high altitudes and then melts and falls as the plane descends.
Though rare, this is the first such incident for the family and perhaps in North Jersey. Omar Baez, owner of Mega Home Remodeling, noted that in his five years of business, he has never encountered anything like this. "I always get called for trees, hail damage, wind damage, shingles flying off the roof," Baez told News 12, "but never what we see here."
Investigation Underway
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, which might necessitate a new roof for the Gomez family. A similar event occurred in December 2021 in Marlton, South Jersey, where the Paradise family narrowly escaped injury from falling ice.
Despite the ordeal, the Gomez family maintains a positive outlook. "If I could tell the story to anyone else," Paul Gomez laughingly told the news station, "they wouldn't believe me."
