Vice President Sara Duterte addressed comments labeling her as the new leader of the opposition following her exit from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s administration. In an interview in Cebu City, Duterte clarified that her actions are guided by what benefits the public, not by political affiliations.
"In my work, character, and principles, I do not move for the administration, the opposition, or any political cause. My actions are based on what helps our countrymen and what is right," Duterte said at the Pasidungog awards for partners of the Office of the Vice President (OVP).
Duterte emphasized her focus on the 30-day transition plan for the Department of Education Central Office and ongoing OVP projects. "For politics, there is none," she stated.
Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque previously suggested Duterte as the opposition leader after her resignation as DepEd secretary and vice chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC). Speaker Martin Romualdez commented that any political announcements should come directly from Duterte.
Meanwhile, Albay Representative Edcel Lagman asserted that the Liberal Party remains the "genuine opposition."
Duterte Family Prepares for 2025 Elections
In the same interview, Duterte confirmed that her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, and her brothers, Paolo (Pulong) and Sebastian (Baste), are planning to run for the Senate in the 2025 midterm elections.
"My father's group, my older brother Pulong, and my younger brother Baste all indicate their readiness to run for senator," Duterte shared in Cebuano.
Twelve Senate seats will be contested next year. Duterte also mentioned her mother's advice to return to Davao City to run for mayor, but she dismissed any plans to resign as Vice President, stating, "There are no talks about that."
