Baguio City has introduced Project Calami-T, an innovative early warning system designed to provide critical lead time for disaster and risk reduction management personnel to conduct preemptive evacuations in the event of landslides.
According to Martin Javier's report on "24 Oras," the Cordillera Administrative Landslide Monitoring Integrated Toolbox (Calami-T) features six sensors installed throughout Baguio and Metro Baguio. These sensors relay real-time ground condition data, including soil moisture, temperature, rainfall intensity, and ground movement, to a central database.
Launched in July 2022 with a P21.3-million grant from the Department of Science and Technology's Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), the system aims to enhance the city's disaster preparedness.
The Baguio City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office monitors the data, enabling timely warnings and actions. "It will give us a lead time to warn our constituents... in cases that we need to do preemptive evacuation," said local disaster and risk reduction management officer Louie Glenne Ladrizabal.
