Davao City, Davao Region, Philippines. July 25, 2024 -- The Davao Consumer Movement looks forward to the review of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) of 2001.
In a statement of the Davao consumer movement it said "we believe there is a need to review the law to keep up with the times and make it more relevant in the years to come. We hope our lawmakers will take into consideration the need to review the laws and regulations governing electric cooperatives. One that would put emphasis on the needs of the consumers and not the needs of some electric cooperatives' need to stay in power".
Among others, the statement of the Consumer Movement with convenor Ryan Amper, it stated that "in the recent SONA of the President Marcos, they found the points on power as lacking in clarity although the Movement welcome those infrastructure on interconnection and power generation".
But it emphasized that "the pressing issue of the unreliability of a number of electric cooperatives in the country was not addressed".
It also stated that "the SONA was not clear on what the government can do to improve the plight of Filipinos when it comes to poor power services. Case in point is the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (NORDECO) franchise area where consumers have been suffering from poor power services and high power rates for a very long time".
Meanwhile, in the two-day Mindanao Development Forum held in Davao City, July 24 to 25, 2024 at Acacia Hotel, the power situation in the island of Mindanao was among the topics tackled.
Earlier reports said "the power issue in the island is being looked into even as Mindanao Development Authority Secretary Leo Tesoro Magno said that this must be solved and vowed to help solve the issue".
Another point tackled by the power sector in Mindanao was to increase the share of renewable energy RE) in the current mix of power supply in the island.
As reported earlier also, "Secretary Magno said the power sector targets to increase the share of RE sources as Philippines envisions a reliable, reasonably price, and sustainable power as embodied in the Mindanao Energy Plan of 2018 to 2040." #
