President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. announced on Thursday that Samar province has made substantial strides in combating insurgency. Speaking at the Northwest Samar State University (NWSSU) in Calbayog City, Marcos highlighted the province's advancements during a program where he distributed assistance to farmers, fisherfolk, and their families.
Marcos noted that at least five municipalities in Samar have achieved stable internal security status, marking a significant milestone in the region's development efforts.
"Insurgency is among the hindrances to the province's development. Despite that, we have come a long way as at least five municipalities have already declared stable internal peace and security status," Marcos said.
Government Initiatives and Support
The President reported that 186 community support programs have been implemented in the province. Additionally, 63 former rebels have been assisted after surrendering to the government, further stabilizing the region.
Last year, Marcos expressed confidence in dismantling communist rebel groups in Northern Samar, urging the 803rd Infantry Battalion to reintegrate rebels into society.
Financial Assistance
During the event, President Marcos extended financial support to various beneficiaries:
- P10,000 each to ten individuals from Samar, Eastern Samar, and Northern Samar
- P50 million to the Provincial Government of Samar
- P19.3 million to the Provincial Government of Eastern Samar
- P25.9 million to the Provincial Government of Northern Samar
These funds aim to bolster local economies and support ongoing development efforts in the region.
