Police have launched an investigation to identify and capture the person responsible for the fatal shooting of a Philippine Eagle named Mangayon in Compostela, Davao de Oro. According to Police Lieutenant Colonel Jesser Vagilidad, authorities are focused on locating the individual who initially turned over the deceased bird to the military. This person's account is crucial to understanding Mangayon's condition at the time of recovery and identifying those present.
If a suspect is identified, the police will collaborate with the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), Compostela local government, and the municipal environment and natural resources office to file complaints.
PEF reported that Mangayon died on Wednesday from severe blood loss due to a gunshot wound on the left wing and possibly sepsis. The male eagle was found in a weakened state by a Philippine Army soldier during a patrol in Barangay Mangayon and was under the Army's custody when handed over to PEF. Despite medical treatment, Mangayon was unresponsive and showed signs of dehydration and slight thinness. Necropsy results indicated that Mangayon was otherwise healthy with all internal organs intact.
This incident marks the fourth Philippine Eagle shooting in 2024, following similar cases involving eagles named Lipadas, Kalatungan, and Nariha Kabugao. Since 2020, there have been 20 cases of eagle rescues, averaging five per year, which the PEF considers alarmingly high.
The Philippine Eagle is one of the largest and most powerful forest raptors and is listed as critically endangered by the International Union
