Vice President and outgoing Education Secretary Sara Duterte urged students with aspirations in journalism to always uphold the truth in their reporting. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) in Carcar City, Cebu, Duterte addressed the participants, whom she described as "future award-winning journalists."
"Never print or post or circulate something that you know is not the truth. Don't destroy the life or image of other people or organizations by reporting something that is not true," the Vice President advised.
She also emphasized the importance of not assuming anything when writing reports. "If you're writing your own opinions, never assume anything. Don't mix assumptions and opinions because those are different things," Duterte added.
Duterte expressed her hope that the student participants would become accomplished journalists in the future, earning both local and international accolades.
The NSPC, running from July 8 to July 12, 2024, aims to promote fair and ethical media practices, showcasing responsible journalism. The conference seeks to enhance participants' understanding of journalism across various platforms—print, broadcast, and online—and to highlight journalism's role in advocating for social consciousness and environmental awareness.
