Despite passing away twenty-two years ago, Rico Yan continues to hold a special place in the hearts of his Filipino fans. Recently, the beloved actor has been making waves online as clips from his popular '90s films have resurfaced on social media platforms, particularly TikTok.
Nostalgia and New Fans
Rico Yan's boy-next-door charm has reignited nostalgia among '90s kids and captivated a new generation of fans. The resurgence of his film clips has led to a significant online trend, with many reminiscing about the late actor's impact on Philippine cinema.
Visits to Rico Yan's Grave
As Rico Yan trends online, there has also been an increase in visits to his grave in Parañaque. Videos and photos of fans visiting his resting place at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City have gone viral. One TikTok video, which has since been deleted, showed a user hanging around Rico's tomb, touching the nameplate, and even hugging it. Despite the deletion, other users have reposted the video, keeping the trend alive.
A Facebook meme page also shared a compilation of photos, humorously referring to his grave as a "tourist destination."
Calls for Respect
Not everyone is pleased with the trend. Actress Jessy Mendiola condemned the actions on her Instagram Stories, urging social media users to show respect for the deceased and their families.
Other netizens have echoed her sentiments, calling for people to let Rico Yan rest in peace. One Twitter user remarked, "Rico Yan is such a moment but he deserves better. Let him rest in peace na," while another commented, "Why are the Rico Yan fans so weird and creepy lol let him rest in peace already."
