PARIS, France — Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo delivered a stellar performance to clinch the gold medal in the men's artistic gymnastics individual floor finals at the Paris Olympics 2024, marking the Philippines' second Olympic gold in history.
A Roaring Triumph
Yulo's victory was punctuated by two powerful roars—one following his flawless routine and the other after the judges confirmed his near-perfect score of 15.000. His routine, featuring a front full into a three-and-a-half twist, left the audience and judges in awe.
Historic Achievement
This gold medal is the Philippines' second in Olympic history, following weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz's groundbreaking win in Tokyo three years ago. Yulo's performance edged out reigning Olympic champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel, who scored 14.966, and Britain's Jake Jarman, who took bronze with 14.933.
Statement of Excellence
Yulo's floor exercise opened with a two-and-a-half twist to front double pike and included a front double full to front double tuck. Despite slight hops, his full-twisting double layout and emphatic landings underscored his exceptional form.
"I did not hesitate. I just went for it," Yulo shared with journalists post-ceremony.
Reward and Recognition
In recognition of his historic win, property giant Megaworld Corp. announced it would gift Yulo a two-bedroom condo unit valued at approximately PHP 24 million. "We are excited to welcome Caloy to his new home when he comes back!" said Megaworld Corp. president Lourdes Gutierrez-Alfonso.
Other Filipino Athletes Shine
Yulo's victory came on the same day as boxer Nesthy Petecio's advance to the quarterfinals of the women's 57kg boxing event. Additionally, pole vaulter EJ Obiena qualified for the final round, though boxer Carlo Paalam was eliminated after a narrow quarterfinal loss.
Despite these ups and downs, Yulo's triumph brings immense pride to the Philippines and sets a new standard for Filipino athletes on the global stage.
