Ukraine conducted one of its largest drone strikes on Moscow on Wednesday, with at least 11 drones targeting the Russian capital. Russian air defenses successfully intercepted and shot down all the drones, according to Russian officials.
The drone attacks are part of an escalating conflict, which has largely involved artillery and drone warfare in eastern Ukraine. On August 6, Ukraine intensified the conflict by sending thousands of soldiers into Russia's western Kursk region, marking a significant escalation in the war.
While Ukraine has targeted Russian refineries and airfields in previous drone strikes, large-scale attacks on Moscow, home to over 21 million people, have been less frequent. Russia's defense ministry reported that in addition to the 11 drones shot down over Moscow, 34 others were intercepted across various regions, including Bryansk, Belgorod, Kaluga, and Kursk.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the strike as "one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever." Despite the attack, life in Moscow appeared to continue as usual, with cafes and shops remaining crowded.
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in the Kremlin during the attack, while Russian officials assured the public of the capital's robust defenses. The drone strike on Moscow follows a similar attack in May 2023 and comes amid ongoing battles in the Kursk region, where Ukraine has reportedly reclaimed 450 square kilometers of Russian territory.
No injuries or significant damage were reported from the drone attacks, and Moscow's airports resumed normal operations after a brief disruption.
The ongoing conflict continues to escalate, with both sides engaging in increasingly bold operations. Ukraine's drone attacks on Moscow represent a significant development in the war, challenging Russia's defenses and highlighting the growing intensity of the conflict.
