Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is accompanying Pope Francis on his 12-day tour across four countries in Southeast Asia. The trip marks the Pope's Apostolic Journey to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Singapore.
In a Facebook post, Tagle shared photos of Pope Francis aboard a flight departing from Rome's Fiumicino Airport en route to Jakarta, Indonesia, the first stop of the Pope's journey. Tagle, along with other delegates, is part of the Pope's entourage for this significant tour.
According to Reuters, the flight took over 13 hours to reach the Indonesian capital. Pope Francis arrived in Indonesia on Tuesday and will stay there until Friday before proceeding to Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Singapore, with the tour concluding on September 13.
During this tour, Pope Francis is expected to advocate for global action on climate change, a topic he has emphasized throughout his 11-year papacy. Each of the countries on his itinerary is vulnerable to the effects of global warming, such as rising sea levels, severe heat waves, and frequent typhoons.
Covering nearly 33,000 kilometers (20,500 miles), this journey is the longest trip undertaken by the Pope, who is now often seen in a wheelchair due to knee and back pain. He boarded the flight to Southeast Asia using a mobile lift, reflecting his ongoing health challenges.
Pope Francis is scheduled to participate in more than 40 events throughout his visit, highlighting the Catholic Church's commitment to addressing pressing global issues, including environmental concerns.
