The Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island could potentially erupt, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), following a series of volcanic earthquakes.
Kanlaon is currently on Alert Level 2, signaling a heightened risk of volcanic activity. "This means that the activity could escalate, and yes, it is possible that it will erupt again," said PHIVOLCS chief Teresito Bacolcol in an interview with Unang Balita.
PHIVOLCS reported that 37 volcanic earthquakes were recorded between Monday and Tuesday. Bacolcol explained that this seismic activity could indicate magma rising beneath the volcano, causing the earthquakes.
On Tuesday, the volcano emitted 2,794 tons of sulfur dioxide and released ash plumes up to 800 meters high, drifting northeast.
Residents and local authorities are urged to stay vigilant, as Alert Level 2 prohibits entry within the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and restricts nearby airspace. PHIVOLCS warns that sudden steam-driven eruptions may occur.
Kanlaon last erupted on June 3, 2024.
