The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that Kanlaon Volcano recorded five volcanic earthquakes on Tuesday, a decrease from the 32 quakes recorded the previous day. The volcano continues to emit sulfur dioxide, releasing 10,880 tons on September 12, and its edifice remains inflated, indicating potential activity.
Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, signaling increased unrest. PHIVOLCS warns that sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may occur, and access to the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited, as is flying near the volcano.
Residents in areas exposed to sulfur dioxide, including several barangays, are advised to take precautions, such as covering their mouth and nose with damp cloths or masks. Some have been advised to evacuate due to the health risks associated with prolonged sulfur dioxide exposure.
PHIVOLCS continues to monitor the situation closely, reminding the public to remain vigilant.
