Broadcast journalist Karen Davila voiced her concern over the arrest of former Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo, after a viral photo showed Guo smiling with local authorities. Davila took to X (formerly Twitter) on September 6, commenting that the photo highlights how "authorities confuse fame and infamy." She echoed Senator Risa Hontiveros' criticism, emphasizing that Guo is "not a celebrity but a fugitive."
Davila also expressed her frustration in another tweet, stating, "The bigger the crime, the bigger the star? One day, hopefully it becomes—the bigger the crime, the greater the indignation." Her remarks, along with those of actress Sofia Andres, echoed the public's call for answers rather than treating Guo's arrest like a social event.
Guo, who faces charges related to human trafficking, money laundering, and violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, was arrested for her alleged involvement with an illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) in Bamban, Tarlac. In an interview, she defended her cheerful demeanor during the arrest, claiming she felt "safe" around the Philippine authorities.
