Four people were killed in separate landslides in Antipolo City and Cebu as Tropical Storm Enteng continued to batter the Philippines, authorities reported on Monday.
In Antipolo City, a landslide in Barangay San Jose tragically claimed the lives of two siblings, aged 12 and 15, and a pregnant woman who was due to give birth this month. The incident occurred in the Daang Pari area, Sitio Hinapao. The local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) head, Enrilito Bernardo Jr., reported the fatalities and ongoing rescue efforts in a Super Radyo dzBB broadcast.
Another landslide in Barangay San Luis, Antipolo, resulted in the death of a man. Additionally, three drowning incidents were reported in Barangays San Isidro and San Luis, and a missing person in Barangay Sta. Cruz was also found dead due to drowning.
Bernardo highlighted the challenges faced by authorities in evacuating residents from danger zones, as some refuse to leave their homes despite warnings about landslide risks.
Meanwhile, in Cebu City, one person was killed and five others were injured in a landslide caused by heavy rains from the Southwest Monsoon, which was intensified by Tropical Storm Enteng. The landslide occurred in Barangay Punta Princesa, leading to the collapse of a concrete wall riprap on a vacant lot, affecting eight houses in the adjacent Barangay Tisa. A 17-year-old girl was killed, and five others sustained injuries in the incident, which happened around 3 a.m. on September 1, 2024. The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported that the victim's body was retrieved at around 9 a.m.
In northern Cebu, heavy rains also caused flooding in areas like Barangay La Purisima and Barangay Bungtod in Bogo City. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and no evacuation was deemed necessary, according to the Bogo City DRRMO.
