The PLDT High Speed Hitters announced that the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) has dismissed their protest regarding a crucial non-call made by a referee during the semifinals match against the Akari Chargers on Saturday.
The contentious moment occurred in the fifth set when the PLDT High Speed Hitters called for a net touch challenge against Akari. However, the challenge was denied, and the point was awarded to Akari, who went on to win the match.
"We sadly share the news that the Premier Volleyball League has decided to junk our protest regarding their referee's decision to not call a net touch on a crucial juncture of our match versus Akari in the semifinals," PLDT said in a statement.
The team described the incident as a "horrible experience" but expressed pride in standing up for the integrity of not just their team but for Philippine volleyball as a whole.
PVL's Explanation of the Non-Call
Following the controversy, the league referenced FIVB rules, which state that players may touch the net as long as it does not interfere with play. The rules also clarify that if a blocker makes contact with the net after completing their landing, it is not considered an infraction because the action of playing the ball was already complete before the contact with the net occurred.
Upcoming Matches
Despite the disappointment, PLDT will face Cignal in the battle for third place on Monday, while Akari will compete for the championship against Creamline.
