Two police officers and a lawyer were killed in a shooting incident over the weekend inside a residential subdivision in Tagaytay City, Cavite, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Monday.
The victims were identified as Police Captain Adrian Binalay from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group - National Capital Region, and Police Captain Tomas Ganio Batarao Jr. from the Regional Personnel Holding Accounting Section. A lawyer, identified as "Attorney Santos," was also killed in the incident.
The two officers, accompanied by a civilian, visited a subdivision in Barangay Maatim to inquire about a residential lot. A security guard reportedly discouraged them from entering, but they proceeded inside to inspect the property.
Shortly after, Attorney Santos and a male companion arrived in a vehicle. According to the PNP, "Without provocation, Atty. Santos opened fire on the officers from inside his vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Both the officers and the suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the encounter."
Police Captain Binalay was pronounced dead at the scene, while Police Captain Batarao and the suspect were rushed to the nearest hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.
Two other suspects were apprehended at Tagaytay Medical Center and are currently in the custody of the Tagaytay City Police Station as the investigation continues.
PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil expressed his deep sorrow over the deaths of the officers. "The entire police force mourns the tragic loss of our brave officers. We will ensure that those responsible are held accountable and that justice is served swiftly," Marbil said. He also extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers and assured a thorough investigation into the incident.
An investigation team has been created to look into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
