Vice President Sara Duterte has urged those wishing to support the Office of the Vice President (OVP) to instead direct their donations to communities affected by Tropical Storm Enteng. In a statement, Duterte expressed gratitude for the support shown to her office but emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of families and those severely impacted by the recent cyclone.
"Due to the onslaught of Enteng, we encourage those who want to donate something to just give it to our countrymen who were greatly affected by the rains and floods. Any help to alleviate what they are going through and to help them get back on their feet would be greatly appreciated," Duterte said.
She further highlighted the need for people to focus on their own needs and the welfare of their families, especially amid rising food prices and other essential commodities.
The OVP's proposed budget of P2.037 billion for the next fiscal year is currently under congressional scrutiny. Senator Risa Hontiveros recently criticized the allocation of P1.909 billion from the OVP's budget for socio-economic programs, such as medical and burial assistance, disaster relief, food distribution, and livelihood support, arguing these are similar to existing programs managed by other government agencies. The discussion between Hontiveros and Duterte became contentious during the Senate hearing.
Meanwhile, the House Committee on Appropriations has postponed the deliberation of the OVP's 2025 budget following Duterte's refusal to clarify how her office utilizes its budget.
Tropical Storm Enteng has caused significant damage in various provinces in Luzon, Visayas, and parts of Metro Manila, leading to floods and disruptions. The Vice President's call to prioritize aid for the affected communities comes amid these challenges.
