Amid Luzon-wide heavy rains, two strong earthquakes struck Calatagan, Batangas Saturday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The first earthquake of 6.6 magnitude was recorded around 4:48 a.m. 

It was felt in the entire province and towns in nearby island provinces of Mindoro Occidental and Oriental, the National Capital Region, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, to as far as Quezon in the south and Dagupan City up north in Luzon.

Approximately 125 kilometers southeast of Manila and 93 kilometers west of Batangas City, Calatagan is a  2nd class town in Batangas.  It has a population of 56,449 people according to the 2015 census of population.

There were no immediate reports of fatality or casualty but strong aftershocks were reported in Batangas, whose coastal towns along with other parts of Luzon are also experiencing heavy rainfall brought about by typhoon Fabian.

Intensity V-level earthquake was recorded in Calapan City & Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Sablayan and Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro; Carmona & Dasmariñas City, Cavite; Intensity IV – Quezon City; Marikina City; Manila City; Makati City; Taguig City; Valenzuela City; Pasay City; Tagaytay City, Cavite; Batangas City & Talisay City, Batangas; San Mateo, Rizal; and Intensity III – Pasig City; San Jose del Monte City, Bulacan;

The second earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.5 struck at 4:57 a.m. with the epicenter identified also in Catalagan.

Intensity V was recorded in Calatagan, Batangas, Intensity IV – Balayan, Calaca & Mabini, Batangas; and Intensity III in Quezon City; Makati City; Manila City; Tagaytay City & Naic, Cavite; Batangas City, San Pascual & Bauan, Batangas; Hermosa, Bataan.  Intensity II  was felt in Lipa City, Batangas.
