PASAY CITY -- Senator Christopher "Bong" Go urged communities not to let their guards down as the country tries to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, underlining that how and when the country overcomes the health crisis will also depend on the cooperation of every Filipino.

On Monday, September 10, Go in a video message during a relief effort in Limasawa, Southern Leyte, urged the public to continue bayanihan efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while encouraging individuals who are eligible to get vaccinated as soon as possible and by still adhering to health protocols.

"Mga kababayan, ang laban sa COVID-19 ay nag-uumpisa sa ating mga tahanan at komunidad. Ang pagsunod natin sa patakaran, pag-alaga sa ating kalusugan, pagsuot ng mask at pag-obserba ng physical distancing ay mga simpleng paraan na makakatulong sa bayan na malampasan ang krisis na ito," said Go.

"Huwag sana tayo maging kampante at huwag kayo maging kumpyansa. Let us remain vigilant since the fight is far from over. Let me remind everyone that your compliance with the health measures will save lives and help the economy recover," he continued.

The Senator's team provided meals, vitamins, masks and face shields to a total of 102 residents from various sectoral groups at the Brgy. Triana Covered Court. Selected recipients received new pairs of shoes while others were given bicycles. Another set of recipients were provided computer tablets for their children's educational use.

To help mitigate the financial impacts of the pandemic, representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Development also distributed financial and livelihood assistance through its existing programs such as the Sustainable Livelihood Program.

The Department of Trade and Industry and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, on the other hand, conducted assessments of potential beneficiaries for their respective assistance programs.

The Senator, who heads the Senate Committee on Health, also offered further assistance to residents with medical concerns. He encouraged them to seek the services of the Malasakit Center at the Salvacion Oppus Yñiguez Memorial Provincial Hospital in Maasin City where they may conveniently avail of the medical assistance offered by the government.

Go recognized efforts of local leaders to help their constituents, namely Representative Roger Mercado, Governor Damian Mercado, Vice Governor Coco Yap, Mayor Melchor Petracorta, and Vice Mayor Ritchie Salomon, among others.

As Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, the Senator has supported infrastructure development throughout the country with the aim of creating new economic opportunities and improving living conditions. In Limasawa, he supported the rehabilitation of roads, and the construction of multipurpose buildings.

In Southern Leyte, he supported the completion of various roads and construction of a multi-purpose building at Barangay Cabul-anonan in Malitbog; construction of a farm-to-market road in Pintuyan; and the concreting of roads in Brgy. Napantao in San Francisco.

Go also helped push for other infrastructure enhancements in Southern Leyte such as the improvement of existing roads in Liloan, Hinundayan, Libagon, Hinunangan, Saint Bernard, and Sogod; construction of multi-purpose buildings in Libagon, Limasawa, Macrohon, Padre Burgos, and Tomas Oppus; rehabilitation of the rural health unit in Silago; renovation of the municipal public market in Silago; and installation of street lights in San Ricardo.

On September 8, his team also provided relief to 306 families in Hinundayan, Silago, and Saint Bernard, in cooperation with the aforementioned national agencies. All activities were conducted in batches to ensure the strict observance of the health and safety protocols against COVID-19. (OSBG)
