The United Arab Emirates is a sovereign constitutional monarchy with seven emirates namely Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. The country's respective official language and official religion are Arabic and Islam.
Collectively established as a British protectorate, the emirates were called Trucial States when a Perpetual Treaty of Maritime Peace with the British was signed in 1819. Eventually, the British withdrew from its treaty obligation.
On December 2, 1971, the UAE became independent and initially had six emirates. On February 10, 1972, Ras Al Khaimah joined the federation.
Located in Western Asia and the Middle East, the UAE has the world's sixth largest oil reserves and the world's seventh natural gas reserves. Among the country's top tourist spots are Qasr al-Hosn, Ferrari World, Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Fountain and Jebel Jais.
