SAN JUAN Predators demolished erstwhile co-leader Caloocan Load Manna Knights, 18.5-2.5, while Pasig Pirates humbled Manila Indios Bravos, 13.5-7.5, in a pair of highly-anticipated matches in the 2021 PCAP San Miguel Corporation-Ayala Land chess championships.
GM Oliver Barbosa swept IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia, WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda blanked Arvie Lozano and IM Ricardo de Guzman whitewashed Domingo Ramos -- all by 3-0 scores -- to power the Predators to another impressive victory in a heavyweight battle of Northern Division rivals.
FM Narquingden Reyes, Narquingel Reyes and Narciso Gumila also won their respective matches to complet6e San Juan's surprisingly easy win.
IM Paulo Bersamina was the lone bright spot for Caloocan as he won over IM Rolando Nolte, 2-1, on board two.
Equally impressive was Pasig, which relied on victories by Sherwn Tiu, David Elorta, Kevin Arquero and Eric Labog to beat Manila.
Tiu upset GM Julio Catalino Sadorra (3-0), Elorta surprised IM John Marvin Miciano (2-1), Arquero toppled IM Chito Garma (3-0) and Labog downed FM Edgardo Garma (3-0) to lead the Pirates.
The Indios Bravos struck back on victories by IM Cris Ramayrat over Rudy Ibanez (3-0) and WNM Mira Mirano over WIM Sherily Cua ( 2-1).
The battle between GM Darwin Laylo of Pasig and IM Ronald Dableo of Manila ended in a 1.5-1.5 standoff.
Earlier in the day, San Juan blasted Isabela Knight Raiders, 14.5-6.5, while Pasig downed Pampanga Checkers, 16-5.
Overall, San Juan and Pasig now have identical 16-1 win-loss record.
Caloocan dropped to solo third with 15-2 record.
Caloocan edged guest team Davao Eagles, 11-10, in an earlier match.
PCAP All-Filipino champion Laguna Heroes lost to Manila, 10-11, but won over Isabela, 13.5-7.5, to remain in solo fourth place with13-4 record.
Manila is fifth with 12-5.
Rizal Towers won over Bangkok-Thailand, 10.5-10.5, 3-0 in Armageddon to improve to 7-10.
Winning their Armageddon matches for Rizal are AGM Herman Vallente, NM Noel de la Cruz and IM Joel Pimentel.
