Comelec e-Rally livestream series for local, national candidates continues
By Nidz Godino
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is featuring campaign videos of presidential candidates Vice President Leni Robredo, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and Senator Ping Lacson, as well as vice-presidential and senatorial candidates namely, Senate President Tito Sotto and Senator Kiko Pangilinan, Sonny Matula, Chel Diokno and Joel Villanueva, and various party-list groups this week as it continued its e-Rally livestream series through their S.A.F.E. Comelec e-Rally Channel on Facebook and YouTube pages.
Live streaming also included tips and pointers on voter education like step-by-step procedures during voting day, filling out ballot forms and some safety and health protocols at all voting precincts around the country.
During the launch of S.A.F.E. Comelec e-Rally Channel last month, the poll body said in a statement it intends to give airtime to candidates running for various government positions in May 9 elections.
Comelec also scheduled e-rally time slots for each position and allocated 3 to 5 slots per night with campaign advertisements running 3 to 10 minutes, depending on government position they are running for.
The platform also aims to help ensure even those candidates can still gain more awareness about their platforms of government and exposure even during COVID-19 pandemic where strict health and safety protocols by the Inter Agency Task Force Against COVID-19 should be implemented.
Meanwhile authorities can stop campaign rallies that have no permit.
Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) spokesman Jonathan Malaya said concerned election officer is authorized to order stoppage of the activity.
"Kung wala pong permit ay pwede pong pagbawalan…puwede pong mag-utos ang election officer na pigilan ang kahit anumang campaign activity na walang kaukulang permiso," he said.
Comelec campaign committees are in charge of granting permits for in-person political activities. They are composed of an election officer, city health officer, chief of police, military head, and DILG official.
The campaign period for national candidates for 2022 polls started on Tuesday, February 8. According to the Philippine National Police, the first day of the campaigns was generally peaceful.
However, the PNP said they observed that social distancing protocol in light of the COVID-19 threat was violated in some campaign rallies.
