Saying the May 2022 elections is a fight for the honest government that the Filipinos deserve, Vice President Leni Robredo braved a rivals' bailiwick in the final week of the campaign --with a little help from the weather.
In a well-attended rally in Baguio City, the rain poured for several minutes during a portion of the program, but stopped in time for Robredo's appearance on stage.
"Hindi pa nasisira ang record ko. 'Pag umuulan at magsasalita ako, humihinto talaga ang ulan," she told the crowd Monday night.
Her speech was also interrupted when someone told her a pigeon flew near the stage.
"Dinaanan ako ng kalapati? Maraming milagro ang nagyayari," she said.
"Alam nyo sa Zamboanga, may lumapit sa akin na paro-paro habang nagsasalita ako," she added.
In her speech, Robredo said she and running mate Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan will continue the fight until the final days of the campaign.
"Kahit mahirap 'yung laban, lumalaban. Kahit maraming mga hadlang, hindi umaayaw. Dahil alam natin na kapag tama ating pinaglalaban, wala naman tayong talo," Robredo said.
(Even though the fight is difficult, we need to fight. Although there are many obstacles, we will not give up. Because we know that when we fight for what is right, we have nothing to lose.)
"Ang pinaglalaban natin dito ay hindi lang contest ng mga kandidato. Ang laban ay mas malaki sa aming lahat. Ang laban kong ito, ay laban sa kung ano ang mangyayari sa bansa natin. Ano ang mangyayari sa kinabukasan ng mga anak natin," she added.
(This is not just a contest of candidates, but this is what will determine what kind of governance and politics will prevail in our country. What will happen to the future of our children.)
Robredo urged the public to carefully study the characteristics of candidates on May 9 polls to elect right leaders who will work for common good.
"Kung okay naman tayo sa bulok at lumang klase ng pulitika, eh di okay lang tayo kahit sino 'yung pipiliin. Pero kung gusto natin ng pagbabago kailangan tayong mag-isip nang maayos," she stressed.
(If we are okay with the rotten and old class of politics, then we are okay no matter who we choose. But if we want change, we need to think properly.)
"At the end of the day kahit anong ganda ng aming plano, wala din pagbabagong mangyayari kapag hindi natin pinalitan 'yung klase ng pulitika natin. Ang ating ipinangako sa taumbayan: gobyernong tapat," she emphasized.
(At the end of the day, no matter how good our plan is, no change will happen if we do not change the type of politics we have. Our promise to the people: honest government.)
Despite the Office of the Vice President's (OVP) getting limited budget, Robredo noted that they initiated various projects in various provinces including Baguio City. These projects include livelihood for the unemployed, improvement of healthcare system and relief operations.
"Dito lang po sa inyo, hindi lang sa Baguio, sa Mountain Province, sa Benguet, sa Ifugao, marami tayong projects dito. Mayroon tayong inaasikaso na weaving communities, programs for vegetable growers, bawat sakuna nandito po tayo," she said.
(We have many projects here not only in Baguio, Mountain Province, Benguet and Ifugao. We have weaving communities under our care, programs for vegetable growers, and every disaster we are here.)
"Bakit po namin 'yun nagagawa? Dahil pinapangalagaan natin ang pera ng taumbayan. Kapag ang gobyerno napapangalagaan niya ang pera ng taumbayan, makakarating sa pinakamalayong sulok ng ating bansa 'yung pera ng pamahalaan," she furthered.
(Why were we able to do that? Because we protect the people's money. When the government can protect the people's money, the government's money will reach the farthest corners of our country.)
Moreover, the Vice President reiterated that there will be no corruption under her government.
She pointed out that the OVP has launched numerous programs for the people because of the support of private sector which trusts their record.
"At ito po yung aming resibong ipapakita sa inyo, na kapag nangako po kami ng gobyernong tapat, hindi lang ito pangako sa hangin. Pero naipakita na po namin ito sa inyong lahat," Robredo said.
(And this is the receipt we will show you, that when we promise an honest government, it is not just a promise in the air. But we have already shown it to all of you.)
"At the end of the day, ang pinaka pangako natin ay walang korapsyon," she added.
(At the end of the day, our greatest promise would be no corruption.)
Meanwhile, National Artists Virgilio Almario and Benedicto Cabrera, and film director and writer Kidlat Tahimik threw their support to the Robredo-Pangilinan tandem. --LDF, GMA News
